Fresh rose petals are handpicked early in the morning when their fragrance is strongest. The petals are placed in large copper vessels called deg along with water. The vessel is heated gently, and the fragrant steam is collected through pipes and passed into a receiver filled with base oil, usually sandalwood. Over many hours and sometimes days, the delicate rose scent is absorbed into the oil. This process is repeated daily with fresh petals until the attar reaches the desired intensity. This method, called hydro-distillation or deg-bhapka technique, preserves the pure aroma of roses without any synthetic additives.
